“Bread between poverty and abundance”: Solar-powered bread-making workshop for primary and secondary schools
Bread is a staple food that is often found on our tables. It is not difficult to prepare and every child or young person usually enjoys the moment when bread is baked.
In Slovenian history, however, bread is not only a staple food, but also a measure of prosperity and poverty, satiety and hunger, freedom and submission, familiarity and strangeness, the development of technology, natural characteristics and cultural specificities, and so on. Bread is therefore also an important teaching tool for promoting exploratory/creative learning along with deep reflection on one’s own and other cultures.
During the workshop, we will knead and bake bread together with primary school pupils, students, the Association of Women and Girls from Trnovo pri Gorici and the Goriška Bakery. We will discuss how nature and social changes of the past influence us, why we should preserve local traditions, the meaning of freedom, love and security, and why we should preserve cultural diversity and develop empathy towards others.
Alongside the cultural and traditional questions of the value of bread, there will be experimentation and a look towards the future: we will bake bread thanks to a futuristic device, the xMobil! The xMobil project is, in fact, a real artistic-scientific laboratory in the format of a car trailer, completely autonomous and powered by solar energy! Launched in the summer of 2023, it has already participated in several festivals and events, which can be viewed here.
